NBA 101 Wednesday: The Five Positions

What should you look for in the five positions that make up a team’s lineup?  Let’s take a quick look.  We will use our team’s starting players as the examples for each position.

1 – Point Guard
The point guard is usually the best dribbler and passer on the team.  His job is to bring the ball up the court, call the plays, and direct the offense. (Ex: Larry Hughes, though I see him as more of a shooting guard)

2 – Shooting Guard
The shooting guard is also known as the off guard.  He handles the ball well and is one of the best shooters on the team.  He is usually an offensive threat because of his long range shooting and small forward ablilities. (Ex: Sasha Pavlovic)

3 – Small Forward
The small forward is usually the smallest player on the frontline, which consists of a small forward, power forward, and center.  He is the most versatile player due to his passing, rebounding, shotblocking, and scoring abilities. (Ex: Lebron James)

4 – Power Forward
The power forward is usually bigger than the small forward but shorter than the center.  He is known for his rebounding and defensive abilities. (Ex: Drew Gooden)

5 – Center
The center is usually the team’s tallest player and the focus of their offense and defense.  He is known for his rebounding, shotblocking, and defensive abilities. (Ex: Zydrunas Ilgauskas)

Now keep in mind that a team can play with a smaller lineup or a bigger lineup, which is why you will sometimes see variations of these positions on the floor.
