NBA 101 Wednesday: Free Agency

Since I recently posted an article regarding the Cavs extending offers to Andy and Sasha, making them Restricted Free Agents, I figured why not wrap our brains around “Free Agency” for this weeks 101 topic.  So, here we go…

Under the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), there are 2 types of free agents: Unrestricted and Restricted.  Let’s take a look at both, using this years Cavs players as our examples.

1 – Unrestricted Free Agent:
(Ex: Dwayne Jones, Scott Pollard)
An unrestricted free agent is a player who has either been released from his team or whose contract has expired without renewal.

Unrestricted free agents are free to consider offers made by any team, and can sign with the team of their choosing.

2 – Restricted Free Agent:
(Ex: Andy Varejao, Sasha Pavlovic)
A restricted free agent is a player who has been extended a qualifying offer by his current team before the June 30th deadline.

Restricted free agents can consider offers from other teams, but the current team has the “Right of First Refusal.” This means that if another team extends an offer sheet to the player, the current team has 15 days to match the offer and keep the player. If the offer is not matched within the allotted time, the player is free to sign with the other team.

For a first round draft pick, restricted free agency is allowed following the fourth year of a rookie scale contract.

For any other player, restricted free agency is allowed if the player is in his first three years in the NBA, and his team makes a qualifying offer for 125% of the his previous season’s salary, or the minimum salary plus $150,000, whichever is higher.

Here is a list of the 2007 NBA Free Agents

  1. Good info. I never knew how much or what percent made up a qualifying offer. I just hear people saying that a team extended a qualifying offer to a player.

    Thx for posting.

  2. Nice read. Thanks Dee.

  3. You’re welcome! Thanks for checking in and taking interest. You both have made interesting points on several of the topics posted on this site. Keep them coming.
