An Official Welcome To Wally, Big Ben, Delonte, and Joe

But before I do that…let me back track a minute to give my fare-well wishes to Larry Hughes, Drew Gooden, Donyell Marshall, Ira Newble, Cedric Simmons, and Shannon Brown.

Larry:  You did have a few good games as a Cav and it looked like you tried, however you never quite found your rhythm here.  Plus, your contract was ridiculous and your injuries never ended!  But thanks for your hardwork and great defense on Bilups in the EC Finals series.  It was one of the reasons we came out on top in the East.  I hope you get your mojo back in Chicago!

Drew:  Although you made a lot of careless decisions at key points in games, you’re personality was great, you were a solid scorer, and a great rebounder.  You were a fav of mine and will be missed!

Donyell:  You were brought in for your 3-point shooting, although it seem to have gotten worse with each passing season.  You did, however, make some big shots for us.  For that…thank you!

Ira:  It seemed like you got lost in the shadows, and never really gave us any major contributions.  But thanks for going with the flow and stepping up to the plate whenever Mike Brown called your number.

Cedric: Didn’t really get to see much of you…but good luck!

Shannon:  You were brought in as a 1st rounder and never lived up to the expectations.  On the court, it seemed as though your body moved faster than your brain.  Even so, you still gave it your best shot, and showed sparks of growth over the past off-season.  Just settle down a bit, and best of luck in Chi-Town!

And now to the Welcome…

The Cavs have been needing a facelift for a while now, and boy did we get one!  According to many, it might be one we’ll regret, mainly for taking on the bad attitude of Ben Wallace and his huge contract.  It seems like Chicago wanted to let him go, just as much, or even more, than the Cavs wanted to get rid of Hughes.

Here’s what I say, Big Ben is a great defensive player who will fit into Mike Brown’s defensive-minded scheme well.  He also gives us grittiness on the court, which I’m sure James will appreciate.  Before, Lebron was the only one emoting any energy and toughness on the court, and facing up to opponents.

Not any more!  He will now have one of the most ruthless, cut-throat, and in-your-face players in the league on the court with him, and wearing the same uni.

Wally is a sharp-shooter who will help spread the floor for Lebron.  With him, Gibson, and Damon Jones…opponents will have to choose whether to take a hit from the L-Train, or a shot from a sharp-shooter placed strategically around the arc.  With those three, we have plenty to rest and reload, and will never be unarmed.

With Hughes gone…And especially with Gibson out hurt for a few weeks, Delonte West will be logging some major minutes.  He’ll probably end up being the starting point guard on the team for the season.  He’s quick, can create shots, and is a decent shooter.  He’ll  give Bron that added quickness to run in the open court and will knock down jumpers when needed.

Joe Smith averaged 11.2 points and 5.3 rebounds in 22.9 minutes of play per game for the Sonics.  He is comparable to Drew Gooden, but a better decision-maker.  He should be a nice addition to our front court, and will give Z and Bron needed breaks here and there.

And don’t forget…we didn’t give up any future draft picks in this deal.  But as icing on the cake, we obtained the Bulls 09 second-round draft pick.

So now a toast to GM Danny Ferry for trimming off the fat, dealing for a new (badder…if that’s a word) team, and a bright future.

And an official welcome to Wally, Ben, Delonte, and Joe…I can’t wait to see what each of you are made of as a Cav!

  1. […] that said, why would you expect for a team that lost half of its roster and obtained 4 new players to come out the box and win each game, especially against a well-meshed, thoroughly-developed #1 […]

  2. These guys need to get it going. Right now the only one proving to be of any worth to them is Joe.
